Willemse; B. Chabner, D. Longo eds. Cancer Chemotherapy and Biotherapy: This book extensively describes the various aspects and applications of anticancer drugs and biotherapy. The aim of the editors, as described in the preface, is to provide relevant information that will assist the caregiver in planning the optimal treatment approach for each patient. In addition, they hope to improve the penetration of new cancer treatment options into community practice by giving ample information about the drugs, their mechanism of action and how to use them safely.
The book is written by 66 authors, the majority of whom are from the USA. In this third edition, there are new chapters covering the pharmacology of central nervous system agents, cancer vaccines, inhibitors of tumor chabner chemotherapy adobe, bisphosphonates and strategies for the discovery of new compounds. Several aspects of anticancer drugs are described, such as their mechanisms of action, development of drug resistance, pharmacokinetics, interaction with other agents and side effects.
There are many illustrations, which elegantly demonstrate the mechanisms chabner chemotherapy adobe action of individual drugs and their pharmacokinetics. The description of side effects is generally chabner chemotherapy adobe extensive, while the indications for clinical use of the various drugs is kept rather short.
Following the elucidation of several growth activation mechanisms in cancer cells, a new field is evolving extremely rapidly of new compounds that will progress to the clinic. For a comprehensive book on anticancer drugs is it difficult to chabner chemotherapy adobe track of the latest developments.
This is also the case regarding new drugs interfering in the EGFR-1 pathway. The fascinating tyrosine kinase inhibitor STI, chabner chemotherapy adobe is currently used successfully in chronic myelogenous leukemia and gastrointestinal stromal tumors, is described only briefly in the chapter on targeted therapy.
Adoptive cellular therapy and cancer vaccines are addressed in Chapters 32 and 33, respectively. Both chapters give easy access to these two research fields. Chapter 35 is devoted to inhibitors of tumor angiogenesis. These drugs are still in their infancy. This makes the paragraph on trial design for these drugs particularly informative for those interested in this area.
The final chapter describes the chemokine receptor database Clinicians usually like disease oriented books to facilitate their search for new and optimal treatments. Although this book is not disease-oriented, it provides excellent basic information on anticancer drugs, which is easy to access for everybody active in oncology.
